Becoming a Member of St. Peter’s

At St. Peter’s, you are welcome no matter who you are or where you are on your spiritual journey. There are many ways of participation and membership in our community. Some people prefer to participate in community activities and services without formally “joining.” But everyone is welcome to attend services, events, and classes. The following information is offered for those who seek membership in a formal way in the Episcopal Church in general and St. Peter’s in particular.

1. Baptism

Any person already baptized can be registered as a baptized member of St. Peter’s. “Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit in Christ’s Body, the Church” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 298). The Episcopal Church recognizes as valid any baptism administered with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit - regardless of denomination. If you were not baptized in an Episcopal Church, simply write to the office, enclosing a copy of your baptismal or confirmation certificate, and ask to be registered as a baptized member. If you do not have a certificate, please write with details of when, where, and in what denomination you were baptized.

If you are uncertain about whether or not you have been baptized, a “provisional” baptism can be performed.

If you would like to be baptized, or have a child to be baptized, please speak with the Rector. We administer the sacrament of Baptism four times a year: in the Fall on the Feast of All Saints, in the Winter on the Feast of the Epiphany, in the Spring on Easter Sunday, and in the Summer on the Feast of Pentecost.

2. Transfer of Membership

If you were confirmed in the Episcopal Church, or have been a member of another Episcopal church, please contact the office to request that your Letter of Membership be transferred here. You will need to provide the church name and city, the approximate date of your confirmation, and/or approximate dates of your membership at your previous parish.

3. Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation

Members of the Church who were baptized as infants may choose to affirm their faith as adults through the rite of Confirmation by the Bishop. In addition, those who have been confirmed in other denominations by a bishop in the historic succession (Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or Eastern Orthodox) may be received into the Episcopal Church by the Bishop. Those who have been baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church and wish to recommit themselves to a life of faith may choose to reaffirm their baptismal covenant with the Bishop. If you are interested in Confirmation, Reception, or Reaffirmation, please speak with the Rector.

4. Pledging

All Christians are called to contribute a portion of their time, talent, and treasure toward the work of the Church. The easiest way to give to the church is to become involved with one of our ministries and to make a financial pledge. Pledging is crucial in enabling St. Peter’s to plan its ministry budgets in advance; it provides a stable financial base for the support of our programs. Pledging also reflects our prayerful response to God’s call to be good stewards of our material possessions.

Every fall during the stewardship campaign, members of St. Peter’s are asked to make their pledges for the coming year. Those joining the church during the year can pledge at any time by filling out a pledge card and giving it to the parish secretary. Pledges can be paid weekly, monthly, or annually, in cash or by check. The size of the pledge is less important than your willingness to commit a definite amount towards the support of God’s work at St. Peter’s.
